Stoke-on-Trent Ceramics Are at a Tipping Point – Here’s How We Fight Back
🔗 Join the turnover club and help us celebrate and shine a light on UK ceramics
For years, I’ve championed Stoke-on-Trent’s world-class ceramics industry — in Parliament, in the media, and in everyday conversations (yes, or course I turn over the dinner plates to check where they’re made!).
But right now, our industry is in crisis.
Recent weeks have seen job losses at Portmeirion, the collapse of Royal Stafford, and tough times for even our strongest brands like Emma Bridgewater.
Rising energy costs, foreign imports, and global uncertainty have pushed this vital sector to the brink.
What’s at Stake?
Every job lost is a skilled craft gone. Every closure chips away at our heritage. And if we don’t act now, the future of ceramics in Stoke-on-Trent is under real threat.
What Are We Doing?
I’ve raised this in Prime Minister’s Questions and called for urgent action:
- A rescue plan for the industry
- A national meeting between energy companies, Ceramics UK, and trade unions
- A commitment to Buy British when public money is spent
We’re working on a National Recovery Plan to:
- Cut energy costs for ceramic firms
- Crack down on fake and unfair foreign imports
- Secure climate transition support
- Boost skills, training, and job security
- Strengthen UK exports and ensure fair trade
