Severn Trent Roadworks Update
Severn Trent agrees to review work schedules after Gareth Snell MP presses for faster progress on Town Road
Water giant Severn Trent has committed to review its schedule of works following pressure from Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Gareth Snell after delays, mess and disruption led to hundreds of complaints.
Road closures around Hanley and Sneyd Green have caused lengthy diversions, delays, traffic queues, and major inconvenience for local residents and people travelling through.
Gareth is urging businesses affected by Severn Trent works to find out more about potential compensation by visiting Severn Trent’s business claims page or by calling their customer helpline.
Gareth and local councillor Laura Carter met senior Severn Trent managers on site to show them the issues and challenge the company on the disruption and the pace of repairs.
Gareth said: “People are fed up with the endless queues and uncertainty.
“Severn Trent have now agreed to look again at their work schedules to see if things can be done more quickly. I’ll be keeping a close eye to make sure that promise actually means something in practice.”
During the visit, the MP joined a walkabout of local side streets in Hanley and Sneyd Green where Severn Trent teams were completing works. In these areas, roads were reopened within 24 hours of completion, a standard Mr Snell said should be applied more consistently across the city.
Town Road remains open to traffic in one lane only, causing ongoing congestion and difficulties for local businesses. Some traders have reported a drop in trade as a result of the works. Severn Trent confirmed that a compensation route exists for affected businesses, but eligibility criteria must be met and evidence provided.
Gareth added: “These essential works are one thing, but months of disruption is another.
“Local people just want to see the job finished and their roads reopened. I’ll continue pushing Severn Trent to get on with it and to be honest with residents about how long it’s really going to take.”
