MP Gareth Snell welcomes urgent drive to reform social care

Gareth Snell, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central has warmly welcomed the Prime Minister’s latest announcement on fixing the broken social care system.

The Prime Minister is making the choice to find common ground across party lines to tackle the big issues. The Labour Government is drawing a line under decades of decline and a refusal to tackle these problems head on, calling on all political parties to focus on solving problems and find solutions together.

The Prime Minister has reiterated the need for a new kind of politics that puts differences aside in order to come together and face up to challenges that Westminster has left unaddressed for too long. Delivering on that pledge, Andy Burnham has met with the two main opposition parties, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, to kickstart this work and discuss how to drive urgent reform on social care.

Alongside, Baroness Louise Casey is leading the Independent Commission on Adult Social Care, drawing up recommendations to deliver a National Care Service. Baroness Casey is launching a Big Conversation on Care, which will give the public their chance to share their views and help shape the future of adult social care in England so that it is designed for the people it is there to serve. It will be open to everyone through a new online platform, starting off the conversation by asking people about the values and principles we should all expect from a social care system.

Gareth said: “This opportunity to bring people together to have an honest conversation about the future of social care. For too long, the challenges facing the care system have been discussed without fully listening to those who rely on it, work in it, or care for loved ones every day.

“The Big Conversation on Care is a chance for everyone to have their say and help shape a system that reflects our shared values of dignity, fairness and compassion.

“I would encourage everyone to take part, share their experiences, and play a role in building a National Care Service that works for current and future generations.”
